Student Placement initial thoughts at Cohort 4
Cohort 4 is an organisation that supports women within the community using peer support and peer mentoring. The women within the group are often from disadvantaged backgrounds, survivors of domestic violence and in need of a support system. They meet multiple times a week to be creative, discuss their wellbeing and enjoy lunch together. This service is deeply important in helping these women feel important, strong and loved as they are. During my first 3 weeks I have been supporting wellbeing Wednesday’s which hopes to help the group feel supported and give them a safe space to express their feelings. I have also been helping with the Friday groups which consists of making lunch for the group and playing games like bingo.
Throughout my first 3 weeks with Cohort 4 I have already learned so much about myself and the workplace. I have learnt that even through small actions I can make a difference. I have realised that sometimes simply being present in people’s lives can have a positive impact on them. This can improve their sense of belonging and help them feel valued within society. Equally the women at Cohort 4 have helped me by making me feel accepted and appreciated as I am despite our differences.
My first day at Cohort 4 I was so nervous stepping into a new place with people I don’t know. All of those feelings quickly faded once I met some of the team behind the organisation. What I found was a group of welcoming and kind women. It has been a pleasure to get to know them so far.
